CLEVELAND - Boston University ranks second among all NCAA Division I institutions within the subdivision formerly known as I-AAA in the final winter standings for the 2008-09 Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today.
BU is 64th among the more than 340 NCAA Division I institutions, including those in the Football Bowl (formerly I-A) and Football Championship (formerly I-AA) subdivisions, and placed eighth among non-Football Bowl Subdivision institutions.
The Terriers have accumulated a total of 200 points, including men's ice hockey receiving 100 for winning the national championship. The wrestling and women's track and field teams tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively, thanks to their NCAA qualifiers.
BU earned 75 points in the fall with men's soccer earning 50 points for advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and women's soccer received 25 points for making its NCAA tournament for a fourth consecutive year.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, which was developed as a joint effort by NACDA and USA Today, measures the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country by awarding point based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season.
