The Motivator: McNichol pushes current and former student-athletes to compete for a cause
Our student-athletes were asked to give their all every day. They challenged themselves and their teammates to push their boundaries for each other, the team, and everyone they represented each time they wore a BU jersey.
This year, Boston University alumnus Dennis J. McNichol (SMG'82) is challenging our current and former student-athletes once again in the Dennis J. McNichol Participation Challenge. Mr. McNichol has pledged to give $10,000 to the team with the highest donor participation rate on April 5, 2013. The winner will be announced the week of April 15, 2013.
"I enjoy supporting BU Athletics, but this year I'm excited to use my gift to help motivate others to give back as well," said Dennis J. McNichol, who is a loyal School of Management graduate, longtime leadership donor, and Philadelphia area businessman. "I can't wait to see who wins the $10,000 prize. I hope everyone participates in the competition by giving back and encouraging their teammates to help their team win. I wish all the teams good luck and I look forward to congratulating the winners in April."
To participate, current and former student-athletes must donate to their respective team's "Friends" fund. Every current and former student-athlete who makes a gift, of any amount, between July 1, 2012 and April 6, 2013 will be counted. Here is how we will keep score:

"I am grateful that Dennis is sponsoring this year's challenge," said Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch. "The best part about this challenge is that everybody wins. While only one team will win the $10,000 prize, every team will benefit from the increased alumni support. You only need to see last year's challenge results to see how well our alumni responded to this type of initiative and the dramatic impact it can have on the future of our programs."
Last season, Boston University Athletics sponsored the Varsity Alumni Challenge, which was the first department-wide donor competition. The challenge surpassed all expectations. Eleven teams set new records--most nearly doubling their previous participation rate record.
By the end of the year, more than 1,000 new student-athlete donors participated with a gift to their team, which accounted for nearly one-third of the University's overall donor growth in 2012. In total, every team benefited from the tremendous groundswell of alumni support. Each dollar given was invested in the program's success and our student-athletes' experience.
