Terriers Place in Top 3 in Directors' Cup among Peer Division I Institutions
Jan. 11, 2008 CLEVELAND - Boston University ranks in the top three schools in the current 2007-08 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings among all NCAA Division I institutions within the subdivision formerly known as I-AAA. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced the final fall standings on Jan. 10. In addition, the Terriers finished in the Top 50 among all 330 NCAA Division I institutions, including those in the Football Bowl (formerly I-A) and Football Championship (formerly I-AA) subdivisions. Among non-BCS institutions, BU placed 11th. The Terriers accumulated a total of 110 points, finishing 50th. Boston University was the highest-ranking school in the America East Conference. "Congratulations are in order for our fall student-athletes and their coaches," said Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch. "The Directors' Cup is the most recognized standard for across-the-board athletic success in college athletics. To rank among the fifty most successful Division I athletic departments is a terrific achievement, and to place in the top three among similarly structured athletic departments is simply exceptional. It also is indicative of the level of success for which we aspire, and we are so proud of those Terrier teams that helped us achieve this ambitious goal." BU's field hockey team tallied 60 points after advancing to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers' men's and women's soccer programs each earned 25 points each for qualifying for their respective NCAA tournaments this fall. BU is one of just five schools nationally -- Connecticut, Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest were the others -- to participate in the 2007 NCAA Division I tournaments in field hockey, men's soccer and women's soccer. The Directors' Cup, which was developed as a joint effort by NACDA and USA Today, measures the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country and awards points based on final national standings in a maximum of 10 NCAA-sponsored sports for both men and women.
