The Anthony "Tony" Dougal Athletic Training Area at Harry Agganis Arena
The mission of Athletic Training Services at Boston University is to deliver the highest quality athletic training and sports medicine services to our student-athletes. We strive to use the best possible evidence while respecting the patient's values and using our best clinical judgment, constantly monitoring patient outcomes as measures of success. We take every opportunity to educate our patients, ourselves, the university community, our students and the public. The sports medicine team is comprised of 10 full-time and nine graduate-assistant athletic trainers who work under the supervision of the Medical Director of Athletic Training Services and the team physicians who specialize in orthopedic surgery and family medicine and are considered experts in the field of sports medicine. All members of the athletic training staff are nationally certified and licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Professional Licensure.
The overall health and well-being of the student-athletes are enhanced through the CAATE-accredited education programs housed in BU's Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. There are currently over 80 students in the curriculum program, who in addition to their full academic course-load, complete clinical experiences in athletic training facilities at BU and many other Boston area institutions. The athletic training staff serve as adjunct clinical professors and teaching assistants in the undergraduate athletic training program. Similarly, all of the academic professors in the undergraduate program are available as adjunct clinical athletic trainers.
In 2005, the Anthony "Tony" Dougal Athletic Training Area in Agganis Arena and the athletic training room in the Aquatic Center were completed, bringing the total number of athletic training rooms in the department to six. The main athletic training facility remains in the Case Athletic Center, with additional satellite rooms located at Walter Brown Arena, the Track and Tennis Center and in the FitRec facility.
