Terriers Advance to PL Title Game After Double OT Thriller, 2-1

BOSTON – Junior Margy Porta scored the game-winning goal with 1:11 remaining in double overtime to guide the No. 2-seed Boston University women's soccer program to a 2-1 victory over No. 3-seed Army West Point in the Patriot League semifinal round on Thursday evening at Nickerson Field.

With the win, the Terriers advance to the Patriot League championship game for the seventh time in 12 seasons as a conference member. BU travels to No. 1-seed Bucknell for the title game on Sunday (Nov. 10) at 12:30 p.m.

BU (5-7-6) trailed 1-0 entering the second half when the Black Knights (12-6-1) struck first in the 29th minute. However, senior Morgan Fagan leveled the score in the 68th minute before igniting the play that led to Porta's game-winner in the 109th minute.

Porta and Fagan notched their eighth and second goals on the year, respectively, while junior Giulianna Gianino notched an assist on the equalizer. Goalkeeper Bridget Carr made four saves.

Kaelan Bradley potted Army's lone goal on a penalty kick. The Black Knights made eight total saves, with netminder Sage Strohman accounting for five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army West Point rattled off the game's first shot in the fifth minute, where Sabrina Rogers skied a shot well over the crossbar.
  • In the 15th minute, junior Morgan Weaver and graduate student Lily Matthews linked up to find sophomore Samantha Aronson at the top left corner of the 18-yard box, but Aronson's chance was blocked.
  • Moments later, Matthews found Porta on the doorstep of the goal, but with multiple defenders draped on her, Porta lifted the shot over the woodwork.
  • Junior Mackenzie Stickelman caught up with a bolting Brigid Duffy in the box and dispossessed her with a slide tackle, then headed away an Army corner in the 23rd minute.
  • In the 26th minute, Rogers once again tried for a chance with a high-angle try, but Carr leaped to redirect the ball over the bar.
  • The Black Knights broke the ice in the 29th minute after Duffy was fouled in the box. Bradley took the penalty kick and buried her try into the lower-left corner of the goal.
  • BU was awarded a 20-yard free kick from straightaway in the 37th minute. Gianino's blast went right to Strohman for the stop.
  • Both sides had chances around the 51st minute. Fagan's cross found Stickelman's head, but her try went wide right. On the other end, Jordan Follenweider's open shot eight yards out skipped wide left.
  • BU found the game-tying goal in the 68th minute after Gianino's shot inside the box was blocked by an Army defender near the goal line. The rebound bounced to Fagan by the right post, and she tucked it home in the lower-right corner.
  • The Terriers applied pressure in the 74th minute, where junior Helene Tyburczy's header sailed over the bar.
  • Bradley vied for the game winner with under six minutes left in regulation off a corner kick, but her try whipped wide right.
  • Sophomore Kat Slott opened the first overtime stanza with a shot by the left post that required another Black Knight team save. On the Terrier corner, Stickelman's header carried high.
  • In the 97th minute, Carr sized up Duffy's chance to the left side of the box to make the save.
  • Moments before BU's game-winning goal, Bradley got a deflection on a shot in the Terriers' end. Carr leapt to snare the corner kick to begin BU's attack.
  • Fagan crossed the ball to Porta from 10 yards out. Her initial shot was redirected by an Army marker, but the junior collected her own rebound and beat Strohman in the upper-middle to seal the win.
STATS
  • The Terriers posted a 22-9 advantage in shots, including 10-5 on target.
  • Fagan paced all student-athletes with five shots, while Stickelman was right behind at four. Seven different Terriers had multiple shots.
  • Corner kicks favored Army West Point, 7-4.
  • Duffy sustained the only yellow card of the match, coming in the 61st minute.
  • Carr, Stickelman, Tyburzcy, and senior Allison Hanlon played the entire match.
