BOSTON – Despite posting a 15-1 advantage in shot attempts and earning all seven corner kicks, the top-seeded Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 4 seed Colgate in the Patriot League semifinals Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
With their fourth shutout of the season, the Raiders improve to 8-8-3, while the Terriers saw their 76th season end at 4-4-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though BU only attempted four shots in the first half, the Terriers dominated possession for much of the 45 minutes, looking to find ways to attack around Colgate's box.
- After the Raiders cleared a BU corner in the 12th minute, they forced graduate student Aidan Bone to head a dangerous cross over the crossbar.
- Colgate attempted its lone shot in the 27th minute when the Raiders sent a curling free kick into the box and Toby Goldner blocked a BU clear attempt to then tap the ball over to Timmy Donovan for a ripping shot attempt at the far post for the 1-0 lead.
- Bone sent a shot wide in the 30th minute, and the Colgate backline blocked senior Kevin Torres' shot attempt 10 minutes later.
- In the second half, the Terriers recorded 11 shot attempts while earning six corner kicks, but Oliver Townend claimed three saves.
- First, junior Damola Salami tried to pounce on junior Diego Rived's shot from the top of the box that ricochet off a defender toward the box, but Townend moved quickly to force Salami into tapping the ball just wide right from six yards out.
- In the 67th minute, Rived lofted a curling 20-yard shot attempt that forced Townend to leap with outstretched arms to push the ball over the crossbar.
- Townend made a similar move in the 84th minute on junior Quin DeLaMater's 25-yard attempt to help seal the win.
